To mark the release of the new fragrance, ‘Flora’, Gucci hired acclaimed director Chris Cunningham to direct an advert, utilising his unique visual style. The online campaign was tasked with providing an interactive experience to match it.

The overall idea was to bring the ‘Grace Kelly pattern’ to life and use it to present the concept, history and features of the fragance.

The solution was to combine motion graphics with Flash. Each section required a unique series of animations and presented a different challenge.

Volvo Ocean Race

The Volvo Ocean Race covers 37,000 nautical miles of the Earth’s most treacherous waters, where crews experience temperatures of -5 to +40 degrees C, constant danger from the sea, hunger and sleep deprivation. Everything depends on the skill of the yacht’s captain and the design of the yacht itself.

A key feature of the website was a 3D Yacht Tour, where one can explore one of the competing yachts. It was my task to build a Flash module capable of seamlessly preloading and displaying pre-rendered 3D sequences while still giving a user as much control as possible.

Shell MPU Game and Banners

11:

During my stint at Twentysix I worked on various campaigns for Shell. These included rich-media banners and a driving game hosted in an MPU. The game’s objective is to dodge obstacles in the road and pick up beneficial items like guitars and holiday icons.

I spent some time at Twentysix, working on various projects as a motion graphics designer and Flash developer. One of the projects was a pitch for The Mirror. I took PSDs and animated them in After Effects to create a visually dynamic presentation; I then wrote a Flash shell to load this content.

A Barilla Day

Barilla have a mission to bring the wonders of Italian cuisine to the world. They have tasty products for every meal in the day, from breakfast to dinner. The “Barilla Day” begins with a family eating breakfast, before we head to Paris for lunch, finally travelling across the ocean to New York, where we find attractive 20-somethings having a dinner party.

We used a 2.5D animation technique, where high-resolution photography was broken into layers and reassembled in 3D space in After Effects. I worked alongside my old allies, Mike Rigley and Tim Foster, on this project.

Tri-Pentox

11:

Sit-up Channels hired me to create some motion graphics for a TV advert. Tri-Pentox is an anti-aging and anti-wrinkle skincare product boasting the latest scientific research and advanced chemical agents. I used this as the basis for my design. My concept was to start a camera move at the subcutaneous level, where tri-pentox does its work and where we would see molecules in action, and then pull back to reveal the beautiful, smooth-skinned model.

Emirates were promoting a service where a traveller’s favoured destinations, representing their ‘travel fingerprint’, would be logged and allow Emirates to make their journeys easier by finding local amenities and areas of interest. I worked on an animation prototype to demonstrate how the service would work.
